Permanent Resident Card - And Permanent Resident Travel Document
You could Renew/Replace or Extend your Permanent Resident Card
The permanent resident card is a very important document. To enter into Canada you are required to have it and also to board a flight to Canada. You need to apply for a new PR card if it is going to expire/ has expired, is stolen or damaged,.
Following are the eligibility requirements to become a permanent resident of Canada:
1 Prove your identity
2. Confirm that you have the permanent resident status
3. Meet all the residency obligations
4. Should not become inadmissible due to criminality.
As a Permanent Resident of Canada, you are required to fulfill the Physical Residency obligations:
A) Calculation of time spent in Canada:
1. If you are a permanent resident in Canada for at least five years or more:
a) You must be physically present in Canada for a minimum period of 730 days during the last five years.
2. If you are a permanent resident in Canada but for less than five years:
a) You will need to show that the minimum requirement of physical presence for 730 days in Canada will be met by you. The counting for the number of days present will start from the date you became a permanent resident.
B) Calculation of Time spent outside Canada:
You may count all days you spent outside Canada and consider these as days to meet the residency obligation in the following cases:
You may also count days outside of Canada as days for which you satisfy the residency obligation in the following circumstances:
I. Accompanying a Canadian citizen outside Canada
You need to accompany a Canadian Citizen outside of Canada and count each day that you have accompanied that citizen. However, the person you accompany should be your spouse or common in law partner. If you are a child under 19 years, you need to accompany your parents.
II. Employment outside Canada
If you have employment outside Canada: If you are under contract to or an employee of Canadian Business or a public service or a territory. You should be assigned a full-time basis position outside Canada for meeting the criteria.
III. Accompanying a permanent resident outside Canada
You may accompany a permanent resident of Canada outside of Canada also for which the criteria are almost the same as accompanying a Canadian Citizen.
IV. Humanitarian and compassionate grounds
Any compelling compassionate or humanitarian factor can be considered by CIC in case you fail to meet the residency obligation. This should be mentioned in Canada permanent resident application for getting such a facility.
PERMANENT RESIDENT TRAVEL DOCUMENT (PRTD)
Permanent Residents of Canada who are outside Canada and do not have a valid PR card to return to Canada have to apply for the Permanent Resident Travel Document since PR cards cannot be issued to them unless they are applying from within Canada. Without a PRTD they cannot board the flight. When making the application for Permanent Resident Travel Document remember :
1. Document Checklists: You need to produce valid identity proofs like the passport; citizenship validation documents, etc.
2. How long is the processing time? If your application is complete, the officer in charge may issue the PRTD within a short time.
3. How to know PR status in Canada? You can check the PR status by logging online and by giving the necessary inputs.
4. The validity of PR: Most PR in Canada is valid for a period for five years, but some are valid for one year also. You can find validity period printed on your PR card.
